US President Donald Trump was evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC on Saturday after gunfire was reported outside the venue.
The incident occurred at the Washington Hilton, where the annual media event was being held. Trump was escorted offstage by security personnel after shots were fired near a screening area outside the ballroom.
The president, First Lady Melania Trump, and cabinet members were unharmed. According to officials, a suspect armed with multiple weapons approached a security checkpoint and was shot and taken into custody by the United States Secret Service.
One Secret Service officer was struck during the incident but was protected by a bulletproof vest and did not sustain serious injuries, Trump said during a press briefing.
The Secret Service confirmed the shooting took place in a screening zone and said law enforcement agencies were assessing the situation. Authorities later indicated that the suspect would face charges including use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on federal officers.
Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel said an investigation was underway and urged the public to provide any relevant information.
The event was disrupted as attendees took cover following the gunfire. Witnesses reported hearing multiple shots near the entrance to the ballroom.
