At least 16 people were killed and six others injured in a tragic road accident on the Swat Expressway on Monday after a passenger van collided with a stationary bus, officials said.
According to the National Highways and Motorway Police, a passenger bus travelling from Karachi to Buner was parked along the roadside near the Ismailia interchange when a speeding van coming from Rawalpindi towards Dir rammed into it from behind. The impact of the collision was extremely severe, leaving the van completely mangled and causing multiple fatalities on the spot.
Rescue teams and Motorway Police immediately reached the scene after receiving reports of the crash. The bodies of the deceased and the injured were shifted to Mardan Medical Complex for medical treatment and legal procedures. Authorities confirmed that the victims included men, women, elderly passengers, and children.
It looks like the accident happened because the van driver was not careful and was driving fast. He could not control the van and hit the parked bus. Officials are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.
Eyewitness accounts and rescue reports indicated that the bus had been stationary due to routine stop or technical reasons when the high-speed van crashed into it with great force.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shafi Jan expressed deep grief over the loss of lives, extending condolences to the bereaved families. He said the injured were being provided with the best possible medical care and assured that the provincial government stands with the affected families in this difficult time.
Authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident.
