Karachi man arrested for luring women for jobs, stealing phones beaten with slippers

A man, who allegedly stole mobile phones of 59 women after luring them with job interviews at a Karachi farmhouse, was beaten by some of the victims when he was produced before a court in Karachi on Tuesday.

Video footage showed several women beating the suspect at the court premises. They demanded that police show his face before surrounding him, slapping him and hitting him with their slippers.

The women followed him as he tried to move away, until police took him into a courtroom. The suspect was arrested on Monday over allegations that he had taken the women’s mobile phones after calling them to a farmhouse in Gadap for job interviews in October.

During the hearing before a judicial magistrate in Malir, the investigating officer said police had recovered some of the stolen phones but needed more time to trace the remaining devices. He also told the court that the suspect’s alleged accomplices had yet to be arrested.

The officer sought the suspect’s physical remand for further investigation. The magistrate approved the request for one day.

Several of the affected women were present at the court during the proceedings.
