Pakistan is all set to install e-gates at Karachi's Jinnah International Airport, Lahore's Allama Iqbal Airport, and Islamabad International Airport, sources said on Saturday.

The authorities are in discussions with a prominent United Arab Emirates (UAE) company to introduce automated self-service immigration barriers at the major airports.

The project, akin to self-immigration services implemented in developed countries, is aimed at streamlining the immigration process for passengers from developed countries.

However, access to this service will be exclusive to passengers with e-passports, as confirmed by immigration authorities.

E-gates, also known as automated border control systems (ABC), function by utilising data stored in a chip embedded in biometric passports.

This innovative technology ensures a swift and secure verification of the passport holder's identity upon entry to the e-gates.
