A judicial magistrate in Malir on Friday remanded the key suspect in police custody for three days in a case involving alleged threats issued to a Karachi University professor over the phone.

The suspect, Syed Muhammad Konain Shah, was produced before the Judicial Magistrate (Malir) during hearing of the case. The court rejected the suspect’s application seeking to discharge him from the case and handed him over to police on a three-day physical remand.

In its order, the court observed that the suspect’s request for discharging him from the case was premature as the investigation is still at an initial stage. It said that the mobile phone allegedly used in the offence, call detail record (CDR) and forensic verification of the suspect’s identity are yet to be examined.

The case follows an incident on Tuesday in Karachi in which Konain Shah, along with some associates, allegedly assaulted Professor Arif Saqi and his nephew Waheed over a minor dispute. A case was registered at the Sachal police station.

A separate case over alleged threats made to the professor was registered against the suspect on Thursday.
