Former army chief General (retd) Abdul Waheed Kakar passed away in Rawalpindi on Monday, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.
Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir and all ranks of the Pakistan Army expressed deep sorrow over his death, according to the military’s media wing.
The ISPR said the army paid tribute to General Kakar’s military career, leadership and services to the armed forces. It also extended condolences to his family and prayed for peace for the departed soul and strength for his loved ones.
General Kakar served as Pakistan’s army chief from January 1993 to January 1996. During his tenure, he pressured then-president Ghulam Ishaq Khan and then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif to resign, a political crisis that led to the 1993 general elections. Benazir Bhutto subsequently returned to office as prime minister.
