Malala Yousafzai has once again made headlines by sharing excerpts from her upcoming memoir Finding My Way, which delves deep into her personal life and experiences. In a recent excerpt published by Vogue, the Nobel laureate opened up about a moment when she deceived her parents to wear a revealing dress for her husband Asser Malik.
This revelation follows an earlier excerpt where Malala discussed her experience with weed during her university years. The 28-year-old activist shared insights into her journey of self-discovery while balancing her traditional upbringing with life in the West.
Malala recalled meeting Asser Malik, then 35, during her third term at Oxford University, describing his presence as a light that “vanquished the dark clouds that hung over the prospect of my third term at Oxford.” She went on to detail how the two secretly dated, often taking precautions to avoid being recognized in public.
In one incident, Malala recounted walking with Asser when a woman spotted them and began taking photos out of excitement. She alerted Asser and her security team, explaining how careful they had to be to maintain privacy.
She also shared a more personal moment, the time she changed from a traditional shalwar kameez into a revealing outfit before meeting Asser for a date.
“When I returned to the table, Asser sat up straight, his mouth breaking into a smile I hadn’t seen before. He pulled out my chair and whispered, ‘You’re a sex bomb!’ I hid my face behind my napkin, both delighted and bashful,” she wrote.
Malala revealed that she eventually confessed her feelings for Asser to her father but hesitated to tell her mother, who initially disapproved of the relationship because Asser was not Pashtun.
“They anticipated a scandal and said I should stop seeing him,” she shared. “I wasn’t going to do that, but I hated the tension my relationship created with my parents.”
She further added that she and Asser agreed to temporarily pause their relationship until she completed her studies, a decision that Asser accepted with reluctance.
