The United States is holding its 2026 midterm elections on November 3, with control of Congress and dozens of state governorships at stake.
Democrats and Republicans are competing for political influence in an election that could significantly shape President Donald Trump's legislative agenda during the final two years of his second term.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives, 35 Senate seats and 36 gubernatorial positions are being contested, making the elections a major test of the country's political landscape.
Democrats eye House majority
According to the Cook Political Report's latest race ratings, Democrats are positioned in the favourable category in 222 House districts, compared with 195 leaning towards Republicans. Another 18 races are classified as toss-ups.
A party needs at least 218 seats to control the 435-member House of Representatives. Although the ratings place Democrats above that threshold, they represent assessments of individual races rather than guaranteed election results.
The final outcome will depend on voter turnout and the results of closely contested congressional districts.
Senate control remains a major challenge
The Senate contest presents a different political challenge. Republicans currently hold 53 seats, compared with 45 Democrats and two independents who caucus with the Democratic Party.
Of the 35 Senate seats on the ballot, 22 are Republican-held and 13 are Democratic-held. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to secure a majority.
North Carolina, Maine and Alaska are among the states drawing attention in the Senate contest, while several other competitive races could influence the final balance of power.
Michigan emerges as a key battleground
Michigan is another closely watched state in the fight for Senate control.
The state's open Senate seat has attracted national attention, with Democratic nominee Dr. Abdul El-Sayed facing Republican candidate Mike Rogers.
El-Sayed's candidacy adds significance to an already competitive contest, as both parties seek to secure a seat that could influence the balance of power in Washington.
The outcome in Michigan will be among the results closely monitored as voters decide the future composition of the Senate.
More than 50 million Americans vote early
Early voting has played a significant role in the 2026 election, with more than 50 million Americans casting ballots before Election Day.
According to reporting based on University of Florida Election Lab data, more than 54 million ballots had been cast by November 2.
Voters participated through mail-in ballots and early in-person voting, reflecting substantial participation ahead of Election Day.
However, early voting figures measure turnout and do not establish which party or candidate voters have supported.
What the elections mean for Donald Trump
The midterm elections represent an important test of President Donald Trump's political standing and his administration's ability to advance its legislative priorities.
If Democrats gain control of either chamber of Congress, the administration could face greater resistance to its proposed legislation and policy initiatives.
Congress plays a central role in approving federal budgets, passing legislation, conducting oversight of the executive branch and investigating government activities.
A shift in congressional control could therefore reshape the relationship between the White House and lawmakers during the remaining two years of Trump's presidency.
A defining moment for American politics
As Americans cast their ballots, the results will determine more than the composition of Congress. They will also shape the political environment in which the Trump administration operates for the remainder of its term.
With competitive races across the country, the 2026 midterms mark a significant moment for American democracy, congressional power and the country's political direction.
