Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday after being overlooked for the upcoming Twenty20 series against England.

The 38-year-old had not been selected since the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in February. He was also left out of Australia's squad for the Bangladesh series in June and the team named on Monday for the November matches against England.

Maxwell confirmed his decision on the Final Word podcast, describing it as both sad and inevitable. He said he had held discussions with selectors before and after the T20 World Cup, but there had been no pressure from the team management to retire.

He said he had hoped to receive a farewell appearance at the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the England series but understood the selectors' decision to give younger players opportunities.

Maxwell played 130 T20 internationals, scoring 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 154.42. He finished as Australia's third-highest run-scorer in the format, behind David Warner and Aaron Finch.

He also represented Australia in seven Tests and 149 one-day internationals, scoring 3,990 runs in the latter format. He retired from one-day cricket last year.

Maxwell has also ended his first-class career with Victoria but will continue playing for the Melbourne Renegades in the Big Bash League
