Iran hangs two anti-govt protestors in public over killing of 4 police officers

Iran on Tuesday executed two men convicted of killing four police officers during protests in January, according to state media.

The judiciary-affiliated Mizan news agency identified the men as Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amir Hossein Safari Hosseinabadi.

Authorities said the pair were found guilty of killing four police officers, setting fire to a police station and damaging public property in the central city of Isfahan.

The executions are the latest linked to the nationwide protests that began in late December and continued into January, during which tens of thousands of people were arrested. Human rights groups have warned that more detainees could face the death penalty.

Earlier this month, Iran also executed two other men convicted in the same case.

Iranian authorities say more than 3,000 people were killed during the unrest, while rights groups have put the death toll at over 7,000.
