Two high-speed trains carrying a combined 544 passengers collided in Spain on Wednesday morning, with at least 46 people feared dead, according to Spanish media reports.
The crash took place between the towns of Mora and Orgaz in the Castilla-La Mancha region shortly after 9am. The trains, operated by Renfe and Iryo, were travelling from Madrid towards Seville, a regional government spokesperson said.
Images broadcast by Castilla-La Mancha Television showed the scale of the wreckage, with a derailed carriage left on an elevated section of track and broken panels and twisted metal scattered down the embankment.
A passenger who survived the collision described scenes of confusion and injuries inside the train. Jesus Jeronimo, 54, told El Pais that people had been thrown from their seats during what he called a “brutal” incident.
“We thought we had derailed. Then, little by little, we got out and saw that our train was tilted. There were many injured people and a lot of people shaken up,” he said.
Spanish media reported at least 46 deaths, while local authorities cautioned that the number of casualties could increase.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he was “shocked by the serious train accident in Toledo” and expressed his “affection, solidarity, and support to all the victims and their families”.
