Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has decided to take part in the upcoming local government elections in Islamabad, directing its district and town organisations to submit nomination papers for all wards across the capital’s 125 union councils from November 2 to 6.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has scheduled the elections for December 20.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party said that PTI’s Islamabad wing President Amir Mughal, Shoaib Shaheen and Malik Aamir had held more than 25 meetings across the capital’s three electoral constituencies over the previous three days.
The decision to contest was made following online consultations with around 400 party office-bearers, the statement said. Those consulted included representatives of regional and district organisations, eight town organisations, all 125 union councils and various party wings and committees.
These included the labour wing, Insaf Students Federation, youth, traders and women’s wings, as well as the advisory council, working committee and core committee.
According to the party, 95 per cent of the office-bearers consulted supported taking part in the elections.
PTI said it would nominate candidates committed to public service and the political ideology of party founder Imran Khan. Preference would be given to dedicated and principled workers who had remained active in the party’s political struggle, it added.
