Spanish football has been left in mourning following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 30, a day after suffering a cardiac arrest during a match against Andorra.
The Segunda División fixture was abandoned seven minutes into stoppage time after De Miguel collapsed following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono. The goalkeeper had rushed out of his penalty area to clear a long ball but struck the Tenerife forward in the chest with his knee.
In an emotional statement, CD Tenerife confirmed the player's death, expressing profound grief and describing the loss as an unimaginable tragedy.
De Miguel remained motionless on the pitch as players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance. Owono was shown a straight red card following the incident.
Medical personnel provided emergency treatment on the field for more than five minutes before the striker was transported to hospital by ambulance.
Andorra president Gerard Piqué also expressed his condolences through social media, writing: "I'm sorry with all my heart. Rest in peace, Jesús."
In response to the tragedy, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) postponed all matches scheduled for Tuesday, including fixtures in the Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina.
The federation also cancelled the official presentation of Spain's Under-21 international fixture against Japan as a mark of respect and solidarity with De Miguel's family, teammates and Tenerife supporters.
UEFA announced that a moment of silence would be observed before all European matches scheduled for the week. Spanish clubs Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal were among the teams set to compete in the Champions League on Tuesday.
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin expressed his sorrow, stating: "We are heartbroken by the death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda. We have searched for words and found only silence."
Tributes also poured in from prominent Spanish football clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, both of which extended their condolences to the player's family, friends, teammates and the wider Tenerife community.
Born in Madrid in 1996, De Miguel joined Tenerife from Castellón ahead of the 2025–26 season. He had established himself as an important attacking presence, scoring 11 goals during the previous campaign.
