Sports journalist Faizan Lakhani compared BCCI chief Jay Shah’s controversial actions in 2012 in the Pakistan vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup final, with the latest controversy in the same tournament where the Indian team refused to receive the trophy from current ACC Chief Mohsin Naqvi.

An Indian X user had criticised current ACC Chief Mohsin Naqvi for taking the trophy with him after the Indian team reportedly refused to accept it, drawing parallels to 2022. When Jay Shah was heading the ACC and Pakistan and Sri Lanka reached the finals, he allegedly avoided the post-match ceremony, fearing he would have to award the trophy to Pakistan.

Faizan Lakhani clarified that it was Jay Shah’s personal decision not to appear at the ceremony and to block others from handing over the trophy to the winning team. Meanwhile, Mohsin Naqvi was reportedly ready to present the trophy on the field, but it was India that refused it.

"Back then, Pakistan never refused to accept the winner’s trophy from Jay Shah. It was Jay Shah who made that politically motivated decision to serve his domestic politics. It was a political move by India then, and it’s a political move by India now," Faizan said on X.
