Federal government weighs emergency measures in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

ISLAMABAD: Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that an emergency could be imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa if the constitutional requirements for such a measure are met.

Tarar said the Constitution clearly lays down the circumstances under which an emergency can be declared, adding that the government would take action if the situation in the province warranted it.

Meanwhile, KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi described governor’s rule as a measure of last resort, saying the federal government does not seek to impose it without serious consideration.

He said the president and federal government would carefully assess the situation before making any decision.

Kundi also expressed concern over the province’s deteriorating law and order situation. He pointed to ongoing protests involving young doctors, nurses and police personnel from FATA and PATA, and called on the provincial government to address issues within the province.
