In a decisive move to curb illegal online gambling, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked 184 websites and mobile applications linked to betting activities.

The update was shared by the Cabinet Division during a session of the National Assembly on Wednesday.

Responding to a parliamentary inquiry, the Minister In-Charge of the Cabinet Division confirmed that the PTA had taken swift action against digital platforms promoting gambling, stressing that the authority’s intervention is limited to blocking access under existing laws.

However, the Cabinet Division clarified that criminal prosecution or legal action against individuals involved in gambling does not fall under the PTA’s jurisdiction.

To further tighten oversight, federal institutions have been explicitly directed not to engage in contracts or partnerships with any companies involved in gambling-related operations.

The Cabinet Division also highlighted the limited scope of the PTA’s powers in removing or blocking unlawful content under current regulatory frameworks.

Earlier, the PTA issued a stern warning to social media users, cautioning against sharing or promoting prohibited or illegal content online.

While the authority reiterated its respect for freedom of expression, it emphasized that misuse of digital platforms to circulate unlawful material would not be tolerated.
