A woman who alleged that she was raped while travelling with her husband and children in Multan had made a false claim, police said, adding that the couple had allegedly been paid to stage the incident.
According to police, the alleged rape and robbery took place on Thursday night, but an investigation later revealed that the incident had been staged.
Police said a man named Abid, who was involved in a financial dispute with another person, allegedly paid Rs240,000 to a man named Saad and his wife to frame his rival. Abid also reportedly provided them with a script detailing how to stage a robbery and make a rape allegation after reaching a designated location, before calling the police emergency helpline 15.
The couple allegedly followed the plan, prompting police to register cases of robbery and rape.
However, the initial medical examination found no evidence of rape. Police said medical and technical evidence subsequently indicated that the incident had been fabricated.
When investigators summoned the couple for further questioning, they switched off their mobile phones. Geofencing analysis allegedly revealed repeated contact between the couple and Abid.
Police later arrested Abid, who reportedly confessed during interrogation that he had paid the couple to stage the incident in order to implicate his rival in the financial dispute.
A case has been registered against Abid and the couple for allegedly filing false complaints. Abid has been arrested, while raids are being conducted to apprehend the couple.
