Pakistan Railways has declared an emergency until December 31, cancelling leave for field officers for three months as authorities step up efforts to improve train safety amid a rising number of accidents.

According to an official statement issued on Saturday, Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has directed officers to supervise train operations in the field on Sundays and travel by train when visiting other cities for official duties.

Chief engineers of the civil and mechanical departments will submit daily reports to the ministry, while the head of safety has also been instructed to provide daily updates.

Abbasi said the government was committed to ensuring the safest possible journeys for passengers.

The measures follow reports that Pakistan Railways recorded more than 55 accidents involving passenger and freight trains since January 1, raising concerns over maintenance standards and operational safety.

Moreover, Abbasi had ordered an inquiry into delays in procuring parts and equipment needed to maintain trains and railway infrastructure. He also directed officials to remove faulty or brakeless coaches and wagons from service.
