The federal government has unveiled a fuel-saving strategy amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said the government would introduce energy conservation measures to reduce fuel demand while monitoring the evolving regional situation. He, however, assured that there was no immediate shortage of petroleum products in the country.

Aurangzeb said Pakistan currently holds about 28 days of petrol and diesel reserves and around 10 days of crude oil stocks, while LPG supplies are available for about 15 days.

Moreover, he claimed that the government does not plan to ration fuel but urged responsible consumption to manage demand if regional instability continues.

According to officials, several energy-saving proposals are under consideration. These include shifting higher education institutions to temporary remote learning to reduce fuel consumption linked to commuting and campus operations.

Furthermore, authorities are also considering reviewing petrol and diesel prices on a weekly basis, replacing the current fortnightly pricing mechanism.

Meanwhile, the government has formed a high-level committee, led by the finance minister, to monitor fuel supply, international oil prices and shipping conditions in real time as tensions in the region continue to evolve.

Aurangzeb added that some LNG cargoes from Qatar are facing delays, while authorities are engaging with friendly countries to secure alternative fuel supplies if necessary.

Officials warned that prolonged disruption of shipping routes in the Gulf, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, could raise energy costs globally and create further pressure on Pakistan’s fuel imports and economy.
