A driver, who crushed two protestors of the Save Gaza movement to death in Islamabad, turned out to be a lieutenant of the Pakistan Army, police said on Saturday.

The protest organised by the Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan has been continued for almost two weeks at D Chowk in the federal capital.

However, the sit-in was marred by an untoward incident when a car ran over sleeping protestors, killing two and injuring three others.

According to police, the distressing incident took place on Jinnah Avenue on Monday in the jurisdiction of the Kohsar police station in the federal capital.

The injured people also include a police inspector, who was performing security duties during the protest in solidarity with Gaza outside the Red Zone.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the driver under sections 322, 337-G, 427 and 279 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Dawn News, quoting police spokesperson Taqi Jawad, reported that the driver is a serving lieutenant and is the son of a brigadier.

According to the publication, the armyman was handed over to the Military Police for further legal action.

Dawn further reported that the lieutenant also resigned from the army after the incident.

Following the incident, the father of the suspect also reached Kohsar police station to influence the cops for the release of his son, Dawn added in its report.

However, the military police took custody of the armyman after the incident went viral on social and mainstream media.
