Special train units will be imported from China for the new high-speed passenger service planned between Islamabad and Rawalpindi, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The project is scheduled to commence operations on March 23, 2026.
The initiative, jointly developed by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Ministry of Railways, aims to provide modern travel facilities for daily commuters in the twin cities. According to details, the service will operate between Saddar Railway Station in Rawalpindi and Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad.
The newly inducted diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains are expected to cut travel time between the two stations to around 20 minutes. Under the arrangement, the CDA will oversee operational management, while Pakistan Railways will remain responsible for track maintenance.
Authorities have also proposed a fare structure, with a one-way ticket set at Rs50. To enhance accessibility, plans are under consideration to extend Margalla Railway Station up to the Ninth Avenue Metro Station, allowing direct integration with Islamabad’s metro bus network.

Once connected, commuters would gain access to key points such as the Pak Secretariat, Islamabad International Airport, and Srinagar Highway. Officials believe the service will significantly reduce travel difficulties for office workers, students, and residents traveling between the two cities.
