Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has said that an agreement between Israel and Hamas could be reached as early as today, which may pave the way for a ceasefire in Gaza by tonight.

According to Turkish media reports, Fidan made the remarks during a press conference held alongside his Syrian counterpart during his official visit to Damascus.

The Turkish foreign minister stated that both sides have shown exceptional seriousness and determination during the ongoing peace talks in Egypt, particularly regarding the release of Palestinian prisoners and Israeli hostages.

He added that the negotiations have covered key points including the release of detainees, the scope and conditions of Israeli troop withdrawal, delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the framework for a potential ceasefire.

Fidan asserted that “significant progress” has been made on these issues, expressing hope that a final agreement could be reached soon.

Meanwhile, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said that it would be unfair to place all conditions of the ceasefire on Hamas, stressing that Israel must also halt its bombardment of Gaza.

President Erdoğan further noted that Hamas has shown a positive attitude toward peace negotiations, calling it “an important and constructive step,” and added that Hamas is currently ahead of Israel in showing flexibility.

It is worth noting that talks between Hamas and Israel, being held under the framework of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace initiative, have entered their third day today.
