The National Institute of Health (NIH) has issued an advisory on the prevention and treatment of heatwave-related illnesses and sunstroke amid a severe heatwave affecting various parts of the country.

The advisory directs relevant departments and agencies to strengthen preparedness and response measures to deal with cases of heatstroke and other heat-related complications.

According to the NIH, the frequency and intensity of heatwaves in Pakistan are increasing due to climate change and global warming, with their effects and associated risks growing every year.

The institute warned that extreme temperatures could lead to an increase in heatstroke cases, illnesses and deaths if preventive measures are not adopted.

The advisory said immediate precautionary steps were essential to reduce the risk of heat-related emergencies and urged citizens to avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during peak daytime hours.

The NIH advised the public to maintain adequate hydration by drinking sufficient water and consuming foods rich in water and salts during hot and humid weather.

Citizens have also been advised to cover their heads, wear light-coloured and loose-fitting clothing, and take other protective measures to avoid complications associated with extreme heat.
