US approves sale of 48 F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is in line to receive its first F-35 fighter jets if a proposed $24.3 billion arms deal with the United States goes ahead.

The US State Department approved the potential sale on Thursday and notified Congress, paving the way for a package that includes 48 F-35 Lightning II aircraft.

The proposed agreement also covers 49 Pratt & Whitney F135 engines, as well as equipment, training and logistical support linked to the aircraft.

Washington said that the advanced fighter jets would expand Saudi Arabia’s ability to defend its territory and deter potential threats. The State Department also said that the deal would improve the Kingdom’s air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities.

The aircraft would allow Saudi forces to operate more closely with the US and other allied militaries, according to the department.

The US government said it did not expect the proposed sale to affect the existing military balance in the region.

The plan follows President Donald Trump’s announcement in November 2025 that the United States intended to sell F-35s to Saudi Arabia.

No F-35 aircraft have previously been delivered to Saudi Arabia, meaning the proposed deal would mark the Kingdom’s first acquisition of the fighter jet.
