United States of America President Donald Trump said on Sunday that leaders in Iran had attempted “to negotiate” after threats of military intervention following widespread protests against its government.
“The leaders of Iran have called” yesterday, Trump said in an Air Force One press briefing, “And a meeting is being set up. They want to negotiate.”
But, as Trump added, “we may have to act before a meeting”.
Iran is witnessing the most massive protests against its government since 2022, and Trump has constantly threatened to intervene should Iran use force against the protesters.
Iran has not yet given its official figure concerning the number of deaths that occurred because of these protests, and it has also been impossible to verify reports given by rights organizations.
Demonstrations started on December 28 in reaction to price hikes, eventually focusing on the government in Iran, which came to power following the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979.
“In Tehran, an AFP correspondent described a city that had been brought to a state of near paralysis.”
