US President Donald Trump has failed to secure the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, with the Norwegian Nobel Committee instead awarding the prestigious honour to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for her tireless advocacy for democracy.
An announcement by the committee stated that Maria Corina Machado was selected for the award “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
The prize will be conferred upon Machado during a ceremony on the death anniversary of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel on December 10, who was the originator of the awards in 1895.
The Nobel Peace Prize is worth approximately $1.2 million.
Trump had actively campaigned for the award, claiming that his peace efforts, including allegedly ending seven wars, had gone unrecognised.
As per reports Trump had asked Norway’s Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg, to lobby for the Nobel Peace Prize on his behalf.
Experts argued that Trump’s role remains controversial, some conflicts he boasts about ending were never actual wars, while in others, he played only a secondary part in the peace process.
