At least four people, including an off-duty police officer, were killed after a man armed with a rifle opened fire at a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The suspect also wounded at least five others before killing himself, officials said.
Addressing a post-incident news conference, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said that the officer who was killed was identified as Didul Islam, 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh. He had been serving in New York City for more than three years.
“He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,” AP quoted Tisch, adding, “He died as he lived. A hero.”
The killed police officer, Islam, was a father of two, and he also left his pregnant wife behind with their third child.
Police said that the assailant, identified as Shane Tamura, hailing from Las Vegas, killed himself after the incident.
Authorities noted that Tamura had a documented history of medical issues, but his motive for the shooting remains unclear.
Tisch told the media that the suspect travelled across the country through Colorado on July 26, then he reached Nebraska and Iowa on July 27, and then arrived in Columbia and New Jersey. He arrived in New York on Monday at 4:24.

The incident left one man seriously injured, while four others suffered minor injuries while trying to escape the scene, Mayor Eric Adams said.
Adam added that the situation is still “unravelling” about what had taken place; however, the surveillance camera footage that came out showed the double-parked BMW, with an M4 rifle, and the person walking towards the building.
Upon arriving at the New York Police Department, the officer immediately opened fire and shot a woman and then began unleashed gunfire in the lobby.
The man then took the elevator to the 33rd floor of a real estate management company and shot and killed another individual.

Subsequently, he walked down a hallway and shot himself, according to the commissioner.
The police found the rifle in the suspect’s possession; additionally, a revolver, magazine and ammunition were recovered from his car.
According to Tisch, an investigation is underway to determine why the assailant "targeted this particular location,” at 345 Park Avenue, a commercial office building housing tenants such as the NFL and Rudin Management, as well as finance companies KPMG and Blackstone.
