A 61-year-old man died after being sucked into an MRI machine by its powerful magnetic force generated by the scanner, according to police. The incident took place at Nassau Open MRI in New York.

Keith McAllister accompanied his wife Adrienne Jones-McAllister to the facility for a scan for a knee injury. During the procedure, she requested help in getting off the MRI table and asked a technician to call her husband into the room.

McAllister entered the scanning area wearing a 20-pound weight-training necklace. The magnetic pull of the machine, which was in operation at the time, immediately pulled the necklace and McAllister toward the scanner.

“He was instantly spun around and pulled into the machine,” News 12 Long Island reported, quoting Jones-McAllister. “He waved to me one last time, and then his body just went limp.”

Troubled, she shouted for the staff to shut the machine down and call for emergency help.

“Turn this damn thing off!” she recalled yelling, as her husband collapsed.

McAllister was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the next day.

In a similar incident in 2001, a six-year-old boy, Michael Colombini, died at Westchester Medical Center after an oxygen tank was drawn into an active MRI chamber. That case led to a $2.9 million settlement for the family.

MRI machines are known to produce strong magnetic fields that can turn heavy metal objects into projectiles.
