India’s Supreme Court has ordered a probe into allegations of illegal animal imports and financial irregularities at Vantara, a large private wildlife facility run by Anant Ambani, the youngest son of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani.
The zoo, located in Gujarat, is billed as the world’s largest animal rescue and care center. According to the Central Zoo Authority, it houses an extensive collection, including more than 200 elephants, 250 leopards, 200 lions, 160 tigers, 50 bears, and about 900 crocodiles.
Wildlife groups have raised concerns about the site, saying endangered animals are being kept on dry, industrial land near an oil refinery, with no clear plan for their release back into natural habitats.
On Monday, the Supreme Court announced that a committee of retired judges will examine complaints about the zoo, including claims of illegal acquisition of elephants, violations of wildlife laws, and possible money laundering.
The court also asked the panel to review whether Gujarat’s climate is suitable for such animals and to look into allegations that the site is being used as a “private collection” or vanity project.

The court said it acted after receiving petitions based on reports by wildlife groups and media outlets.
Earlier this year, Germany’s Süddeutsche Zeitung reported that Vantara had imported around 39,000 animals in 2024, some from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the UAE, and Venezuela. The facility also transported dozens of elephants in specially designed trucks from other parts of India.
Vantara issued a statement Tuesday saying it would “fully cooperate” with investigators and remains committed to “transparency, compassion and compliance with the law.” It said its primary focus remains the “rescue, rehabilitation and care of animals.”
The zoo also made headlines earlier this year as one of the venues for Anant Ambani’s extravagant multi-day wedding celebrations, which featured performances by international artists including Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and Katy Perry.
