A 26-year-old postgraduate doctor committed suicide in India's Kerala.

Shahana ended her life allegedly after her boyfriend refused to marry her because her family could not fulfill dowry demands.

The proposed marriage between the victim and Dr. Ruwise ran into snags when Ruwise's family insisted on a dowry of 150 sovereigns of gold, 12 acres of land, and a BMW car.

Initially, Shahana's family agreed to provide 50 sovereigns of gold, 50 acres of land, and a car, but the disagreement led to the cancellation of the marriage, leaving her upset.

Shahana didn't show up for her night duty on Monday, and attempts to reach her were unsuccessful.

Her friends visited her apartment, finding the door locked. After alerting the police, they broke in and discovered the doctor lying unconscious on the floor. After which they took her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

According to the police, she took her life by injecting a high dose of anesthetic drug.

The deceased also left a suicide note which was recovered by the police, saying “Everyone wants money only”.

Moreover, a case has been registered against Dr. Ruwise considering this as unnatural death, and charging him with abetment to suicide and sections of the dowry Prohibition Act.
