Nasir Jamshed says he considered suicide during prison sentence

Former Pakistan cricketer Nasir Jamshed has revealed that his time in a London prison was the most difficult period of his life, admitting that he contemplated suicide on several occasions but stopped himself after thinking about his wife and daughter.

Speaking to a private television channel, Jamshed said he was under severe mental stress during his imprisonment. He explained that his wife regularly sent him photographs of their daughter, which gave him the strength to carry on.

“I decided to live for my wife and daughter,” he said, adding that he deeply regrets his mistakes and has paid a heavy price for them.

Jamshed stated that had he received proper legal advice, his sentence might have been reduced and his ban potentially lifted earlier. He disclosed that when a recorded conversation from a shisha café in Birmingham was played in court, he chose to plead guilty.

According to Jamshed, his lawyer had advised him not to admit guilt and to sever contact with the cricket board. He also claimed he was misled by Shahid Ali, who he alleged was primarily interested in financial gain.

The former batsman admitted his involvement in a conspiracy alongside Yousuf Anwar and said he facilitated contact between Anwar and cricketers Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif.

Jamshed appealed to the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board to consider waiving the remaining year of his ban. He acknowledged that he had committed a serious mistake and urged young cricketers never to engage in corruption.

It is worth noting that Manchester Crown Court sentenced Jamshed to 17 months in prison, while he was also handed a 10-year ban from cricket.
