Cristiano Ronaldo will retire from international football after Portugal’s November fixtures, bringing his 23-year career with the national side to a close.
The 41-year-old forward announced his decision in a social media post on Thursday, saying he would hand back the number seven shirt after the upcoming international break.
Ronaldo led Portugal to their first major international title at Euro 2016 and was also part of the teams that won the Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
In his announcement, he described the decision as difficult, saying it involved both his head and his heart. He also thanked his family, the Portuguese people and the teammates, coaches and staff who had been part of his journey.
Ronaldo said his international career had been worthwhile if his goals had brought happiness, pride or moments of relief to supporters.
“Portugal will always be a part of me,” he wrote in the caption accompanying his announcement video.
He leaves the national team with 234 appearances and 146 goals, records for the most appearances and goals in men’s international football.
