Murtaza Wahab stated that last night, the child who fell into the manhole was a rainwater drainage, not a sewage drain. He added that some people are trying to politicize the situation.

He expressed his condolences to the child’s family, saying that despite the huge loss, he will support them in every possible way. However, he called it unfortunate that some are trying to make the tragedy political.

A 500-meter section has been dug up and the search is ongoing. Wahab said CCTV footage is being reviewed to understand what happened. He has also directed the MD of the Water Corporation to investigate who stopped the machinery, and legal action will be taken against any responsible authorities.

He noted that 80,000 manhole covers were installed last year, and the Water Corporation has provided covers to 55% of UC chairmen. Still, investigations will determine how long this particular manhole cover was missing and who is responsible.

Wahab added that the town chairman belongs to Jamaat-e-Islami. “If I were to say they were responsible, people would get angry. Politicizing such situations won’t solve anything,” he said. He emphasized that KMC and the town administration will conduct a proper investigation into the rainwater drainage system.

The Mayor of Karachi stated that he is accountable to God, saying, “My Lord knows my intentions and actions.”

Responding to a journalist’s question during a press conference, “If this were the child of a government official, how would you react? How do you even sleep at night? Remember, there is also the Court of God”.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab said that he is part of the government and came on his own. He added that such provocative remarks prevent matters from being resolved. “If blocking the road helps these parents address their issue, then so be it,” he said.

He further stated that he could have canceled the press conference, but he believes it is his responsibility. “This is my city, these are my people. I am accountable to God and to the public. My Lord knows my intentions and actions.”
