KARACHI; Muttahida Qaumi Movement- Pakistan (MQM-P) lawmaker Engineer Adil Askari has submitted a motion of adjournment in the Sindh Assembly, calling attention to what he termed an “unjust imposition of electronic challans” on citizens amid crumbling road conditions and inadequate transport facilities.
In the motion, Askari said the government has introduced electronic traffic fines without ensuring basic traffic management and road safety measures. He noted that broken roads across Karachi and the province are causing daily hardship and frequent accidents.
“There is no proper public transport system in place,” he stated. “Commuters are left with no viable options for transportation.”
The motion further highlighted the non-functional traffic signals, lack of road markings, zebra crossings, and traffic signboards, which make it nearly impossible for both drivers and pedestrians to follow traffic laws.
Askari also pointed out that encroachments and illegal occupations by various mafias have narrowed main roads, worsening congestion across the city.
Under these circumstances, the MQM- P motion termed the e-challan system unjust, premature, and detrimental to citizens.
Instead of improving road infrastructure, the motion said, the government is penalizing citizens under a flawed and unfair system.
The lawmaker urged the House to take immediate action, demanding that the e-challan system be suspended until road infrastructure is improved.
The motion also called for a comprehensive plan for road repairs, installation of traffic signals, and removal of encroachments, requesting that the regular proceedings of the Assembly be postponed to discuss this urgent public issue.
