Residents of Bihar Colony in Lyari and neighbourhood is facing the same chronic sewerage and road infrastructure problems seen across many parts of Karachi, with little to no attention from the authorities.

The situation was observed during a visit by the Dialogue Pakistan team under its civic initiative “Karachi Aisa Nahi Tha”, which aims to document and highlight grassroots issues affecting urban life.

Locals complained that open gutters, damaged streets and poor sanitation have made daily routines extremely difficult.

Residents said that no elected representative ever visits the area to assess the problems, leaving citizens to struggle on their own.

People heading to schools, madrasas and mosques are particularly affected, as navigating the broken roads and overflowing sewerage has become both unsafe and unhygienic.

One resident, expressing deep frustration, said the situation has deteriorated to the point where people openly question their leadership.

“If you cannot deliver basic services, then you should resign,” he remarked, echoing the sentiments of many in the area.

Shopkeepers also reported serious economic losses. A local trader recalled a recent incident in which a motorcyclist carrying children fell into an open gutter. “Customers avoid this area. No one comes here, not even to buy a mobile phone,” he said.

Residents claim that despite repeated complaints, no visible improvement has taken place for nearly two years. “There is no development work happening here at all,” one citizen said.

According to locals, every street in Bihar Colony presents the same picture of neglect, leading to the spread of diseases and growing public despair.

They have urged the authorities to take immediate action to restore basic infrastructure and dignity to the area.
