Former Google DeepMind researcher warns AI could ‘kill all humans’

A former Google DeepMind researcher has joined a growing number of AI experts warning about the potential dangers of advanced artificial intelligence, saying that the technology could “kill all humans”.
Bilal Chughtai, who worked on artificial general intelligence (AGI) safety and alignment research at Google DeepMind, disclosed his resignation on Monday and said he believed AI posed a potentially catastrophic threat to humanity.
“I recently resigned from Google DeepMind, where I worked on AGI safety and alignment research,” Chughtai wrote on X. “I earnestly believe that AI has the potential to kill us all, and that we might be running out of time to avoid this outcome.”

"The pace of AI progress in the past few years has been staggering," Chughtai went on.
"When I first started working on AI in early 2022, AIs were amusingly useless. Just four years on, AI agent swarms from OpenAI are cracking famous century-old math problems and, more worryingly, escaping the control of OpenAI and autonomously hacking into the third-party company HuggingFace, against anyone's wishes."
The researcher worked as a research engineer at Google DeepMind and co-authored research papers during his time at the company. His LinkedIn profile shows that he left Google DeepMind in July 2026. His comments followed similar warnings from researchers at Anthropic, another major AI company.
Last week, Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon said that he had resigned from the company partly because of concerns that some people developing advanced AI genuinely believed it could destroy humanity before the end of the decade.
Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger subsequently agreed with Coxon’s assessment. He said he believed there was more than a 10pc chance that AI could kill all humans within the next decade.
The latest warnings have added to a wider debate about whether the development of increasingly powerful AI systems is moving too quickly.
