Punjab Police Constable Haider Ali swept away during heroic flood rescue in Jhelum

Punjab Police Constable Haider Ali, who was involved in an operation to rescue hundreds of citizens trapped in the water due to heavy rains during the past two days, was swept away in the Jhelum River.

His funeral was held on Friday at Police Lines Jhelum, with senior police officials also in attendance. Haider was known for his dedication to rescuing children, a task that brought him immense happiness.

On Thursday, more than 400 citizens trapped in the floodwaters of the Jhelum River were rescued and during the same operation, Constable Haider Ali himself was swept away in the water while saving others.

DSP Shahbaz Ahmed told the media that ‘Haider Ali was as brave as his name and showed enthusiasm and passion while rescuing people.’

Haider was the only son of his parents. His father worked as a laborer in Karachi while he lived with his mother and six sisters in his village of Saidpur.

According to the deceased's cousin, ‘Haider Ali was obsessed with joining the police department. Whenever he saw a government vehicle, he would say, ‘I will sit in this vehicle one day too.’

Emergency measures were taken in Jhelum district to evacuate people trapped in the flood-hit areas caused by the rains, and police and other agencies were deployed. However, the police and Rescue 1122 took the help of ropes to evacuate around 400 people trapped in the flood.

District Police Officer Tariq Aziz Sindhu said that the police were alerted to the situation arising from the rains and floods and to deal with it, which is why there was no loss of life among the citizens.

He said that ‘during the rescue operation, the flow of water suddenly intensified, due to which Haider was swept away.’
