PM Shehbaz directs for promotion of electric vehicles in Pakistan

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif Wednesday chaired a meeting on promotion of electric vehicles in Pakistan.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed radical steps to accelerate the promotion of electric vehicles (EV) in the country.
Prime Minister said that given the current regional situation and future needs, the promotion of EV vehicles will not only reduce the fuel import burden, but is also very important for environmental protection and energy security.
Sharif said transparency should be ensured in the subsidy given on electric motorcycles for low-income people under the National EV Policy and the implementation of this scheme should be further accelerated.
During the meeting, Prime Minister was briefed on the ongoing steps for the nationwide promotion of EV.
It was told that 72 certificates have been issued for the manufacture of electric motorcycles and rickshaws, while 4 license have been issued for electric vehicles across the country.
PM Shehbaz was told that 123 applications have been received so far for the establishment of EV charging stations. The meeting was told that it is being planned to run 30 percent of vehicles in the country on electricity in the next 5 years, which will save an estimated $4.5 billion in fuel.
PM Shehbaz said electric bikes will be provided to government employees up to grade 16 on easy installments.
