Pakistan hopes to host upcoming Iran-US talks soon, says PM Shehbaz

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday expressed hope that Pakistan would host the next round of talks between Iran and the United States “very soon”, while praising US President Donald Trump for his ongoing diplomatic engagement and peace efforts in the region.

In a post on X, the prime minister said Trump had held a “very useful and productive” telephone conversation with leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Pakistan regarding regional developments and efforts aimed at securing peace.

PM Shehbaz said Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir represented Pakistan during the call and appreciated his role in the ongoing mediation process.

“The discussions provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on the current regional situation and how to move the ongoing peace efforts forward to bring lasting peace in the region,” the premier said.

“Pakistan will continue its peace efforts with utmost sincerity and we hope to host the next round of talks very soon,” he added.

The remarks came hours after Trump stated on Truth Social that an agreement involving the United States, Iran and several regional countries had been “largely negotiated”, pending finalisation.

Trump also said discussions were continuing on the remaining details of the proposed understanding.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has stepped up diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran in recent weeks. According to ISPR, Field Marshal Munir’s meetings with Iranian political and military leadership during his visit to Tehran contributed positively to mediation efforts between the two sides.
