CDF Asim Munir spoke to Trump ahead of Tehran visit: Report

US President Donald Trump spoke with Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir last week ahead of his visit to Tehran, with Washington urging Islamabad to use its influence to help bring Iran back to negotiations, Reuters reports, citing three Pakistani sources.

The call, which has not previously been reported, was initiated by Trump, the report said, quoting two of the Pakistani sources said.

CDF Asim Munir arrived in Tehran on Monday accompanied by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi as part of Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace and stability. One Pakistani source said that the main US request was for Pakistan to encourage Iran to return to talks as tensions between Tehran and Washington continue to rise.

Trump had warned last week that countries providing “any type of lifeline” to Iran could face economic consequences, while Tehran has threatened to halt oil exports from the Gulf.

Pakistan has maintained close ties with Iran and has played a mediating role in efforts to resolve the conflict. Earlier mediation efforts resulted in an interim peace agreement in June, but renewed fighting subsequently undermined the arrangement.
