A Pakistan Army officer was martyred during an intelligence-based operation (IBO) carried out in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the military's media wing said on Thursday.
During the operation, security forces eliminated seven militants linked to Indian-backed groups.
According to Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the operation was launched on October 8 in the Daraban area following intelligence reports about the presence of terrorists. A heavy gunfight ensued between security personnel and the militants during the raid.
Major Sibtain Haider, who was commanding his unit during the mission, was martyred while leading his troops in the operation. The ISPR noted that he fought with bravery and made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. The officer, aged 30, was a native of Quetta district.
President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over the loss and paid homage to Major Sibtain, commending his act of valour and selflessness. He stated that the major had demonstrated remarkable heroism by laying down his life for the protection of the country.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also issued a separate statement, congratulating the security forces on successfully neutralizing the threat. He referred to the militants as part of the 'Fitna al-Khawarij' and praised the armed forces for their competence and determination.
The Prime Minister offered special recognition to the fallen officer, saluting his courage and leadership. “The entire nation, including myself, is proud of the brave officers and soldiers of our armed forces, who remain ever vigilant in safeguarding the nation,” he said.
He further stressed the government’s firm resolve to continue the fight against terrorism, pledging that efforts would persist until the complete elimination of extremist elements. “The people stand united with our armed forces and fully support their tireless commitment to defending the homeland,” he added
