Today marks the martyrdom anniversary of Major Shabbir Sharif, a valiant hero of the 1971 war who was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, Pakistan's highest military honor

The armed forces honoured Major Sharif Shaheed on his 52nd Martyrdom Day, emphasising that it symbolises the sacrifices made by the Pakistani forces for their homeland.

Born on April 28, 1943, in Kunjah, Gujarat, Major Shabbir Sharif hailed from a military family and imbibed the values of fearlessness and bravery.

Commissioned in April 1964, he showcased exceptional skills, earning the coveted 'Azazi Shamsher (sword of honour)' at his passing out parade.

Despite injuries in the 1965 war, his dedication led him to command at Chawinda city that borders India during the conflict, where he demonstrated strategic brilliance and repelled the enemy forces.

Shabbir Sharif was elevated to the rank of Major in April 1970, and displayed unwavering commitment to the defense of the nation.

In the 1971 Pak-India war, he received orders to capture high ground near the Sulemanki Headworks, defended by Indian infantry and supported by a squadron of tanks.

Major Sharif successfully seized the area, eliminating 43 Indian soldiers and destroying theirfour tanks.

His unit also fended off counter-attacks from two enemy battalions. Tragically, on December 6, 1971, he attained martyrdom after being struck by a tank shell.

Major Sharif's younger brother, General Raheel Sharif, held the esteemed position of Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), the highest rank in the Pakistan Army.

He is the nephew of another Nishan-e-Haider recipient, Major Raja Aziz Bhatti Shaheed.
