Renowned actor Asim Mehmood has kick-started a campaign against dowry and requested his fans to add their part to end an old tradition.

Taking to Instagram stories, the Piyari Nimmo star raised his voice against dowry, a trend in the country that pushed the bride's family into a burden of inessential expenses.

"Can we start a campaign against dowry? If you are with me then share my next post with this hashtag #SayNoToDowry," his first story read.

In another post, the actor explained the unnecessary expenses that led a girl's family to spend millions on a single ceremony.

“Dowry Rs3,000,000, catering Rs500,000, groom’s watch, groom’s ring, food for groom’s family, breakfast before Walima, dresses for in-laws and other. Beti hay ya koi saza hay [Either she is daughter or punishment],” the Halla Gulla actor said.

A survey conducted by Pulse Consultants in 2020 revealed that more than 50% of Pakistanis believe that a girl's family should give dowry when marrying her off.
