KARACHI: A motorcycle-borne couple reportedly robbed a fruit seller of cash and mobile phones in Karachi on Saturday.

In his complaint registered at Gulberg police station, the fruit vendor alleged that a man and a woman had approached him in Karachi’s North Nazimabad area in the guise of buying watermelons.

According to him, the couple first arrived at his push cart and bought watermelons worth Rs 680. They then handed him a Rs5,000 note and asked for change, on which the fruit seller took the bill and returned the remaining amount.

However, the fruit seller, said that the armed couple declined to buy the fruit citing the hiked price of the watermelons and took their money back.

As soon as the other customers left, the couple returned, took out guns and snatched Rs60,000 along with two mobile phones from him, the street vendor alleged. The crime rate in Karachi is increasing rapidly as authorities fail to control the worsening law and order situation.

Reports said that at least 45 Karachi citizens have been killed so far in 2024 over resisting robberies with February recording the highest number of 20 killings.
