Turkiye’s Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu has been fined after posting a video showing himself driving at 225 km/h on a highway outside Ankara, almost twice the legal speed limit.

The video, filmed on the Ankara–Nigde Highway, was shared on the minister’s official social media account and quickly went viral. Social media users criticised him for overspeeding and sending the wrong message to motorists across the country.

According to Turkish media reports, traffic police fined Uraloglu 9,267 lira (around $280) for the violation, which took place about 50 kilometres from the capital.

Following the online backlash, the minister acknowledged his mistake, posting an image of his ticket on X. He explained that he had briefly taken the wheel to review progress on the highway project and “unintentionally exceeded the speed limit for a short period.”

“With the related video, I have essentially reported myself. Adhering to speed limits is mandatory for everyone. Our Highway Gendarmerie has imposed the necessary penalty. I will be much more careful from now on,” he added.

Some social media users still questioned why the video was cleared for posting, saying that his media team should have noticed the violation before sharing it publicly.

The incident has reignited debate over road safety and the role of public figures in setting an example, with calls for stricter adherence to traffic laws regardless of rank or position.
