President Masoud of Iran has ordered to start nuclear negotiations with the US.
According to Iranian media, the talks will begin on Friday in Istanbul, where Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is likely to meet U.S. representative Steve Witkoff. It is also reported that Turkey, Egypt, Qatar and Oman have been mediating between the two sides.
President Trump is hopeful about reaching a deal aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear program, but he has also threatened “bad things” if no agreement is made. Furthermore, Trump has ordered an aircraft carrier group to the Middle East as tensions rise, stressing that “time is running out” for Iran.
Iran insists it is open to talks while vowing a forceful response to any aggression.
The backdrop to these negotiations is that the U.S. wants Iran to limit uranium enhancement, restrain from its missile program, and stop support for allied militant group. These are the conditions that Iran has resisted. However, Iranian leaders say sanctions relief and respect for sovereignty should be a part of any deal that is finalized.
