Indirect diplomatic talks were held between the US and Iran, in Muscat on Friday. The talks concluded without any major decisions but were described by officials on both sides as a “good start” and a step towards peaceful and continued engagement.

According to reports, the discussions, mediated by Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, took place after the intense conflict between US and Iran last year. Both the U.S and Iran decided on further consultations in their capitals before deciding how to proceed.

However, Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister of Iran referred to the talks as a positive beginning. Moreover, he claimed that overcoming the “wall of mistrust” between the two countries is essential to progress.

Meanwhile, coordination on the next phase remains under review by leaderships of Iran and U.S.

“Any dialogue requires refraining from threats and pressure. (Tehran) only discusses its nuclear issue … We do not discuss any other issue with the US,” Araghchi said, referring to earlier attempts by U.S to widen the agenda of the dialogue to cover the country’s missile programme as well.

The U.S. delegation included representative Steve Witkoff and senior advisers. They emphasized on Washington’s dual strategy of progressing with diplomacy alongside a strong security position.

Furthermore, within hours of the talks ending, the U.S. issued new sanctions targeting Iranian oil-related entities, giving the message to Iran that the negotiations are unfolding under sustained pressure and that meaningful sanctions relief, Iran’s core demand, remains a distant prospect.

Additionally, the U.S. Virtual Embassy in Iran warned its citizens to leave the country due to heightened risks and possible sudden travel bans.
