Pakistan has positioned itself as a central intermediary in efforts to de-escalate tensions between the United States and Iran, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announcing a temporary ceasefire following diplomatic outreach by Islamabad.

Speaking on Wednesday, Sharif said Washington and Tehran, along with their respective allies, had agreed to a two-week truce, paving the way for negotiations expected to be held in Islamabad. The ceasefire, earlier indicated by US President Donald Trump and Iranian officials, is aimed at halting hostilities across multiple fronts in the Middle East.

Analysts have described the development as a significant diplomatic achievement. South Asia expert Michael Kugelman noted that Pakistan had demonstrated its capacity to manage complex, high-stakes negotiations.

Pakistan’s role is underpinned by its longstanding ties with both countries. It shares a 900-kilometre border with Iran and maintains deep cultural and religious links, while also acting as a diplomatic bridge for Tehran in Washington, where Iran lacks formal representation. Former ambassador Asif Durrani highlighted Pakistan’s unique position as a country maintaining workable relations with both sides.

On the US front, ties have been reinforced through recent high-level engagements, including interactions involving Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir. Observers note that personal diplomacy has contributed to easing tensions and building trust.

Pakistan has also coordinated with regional players, including Saudi Arabia and China, both of which have supported de-escalation efforts.

Officials say neutrality is crucial for Pakistan’s economic stability, particularly due to its reliance on energy imports routed through the Strait of Hormuz. The government expects that successful negotiations could enhance regional stability and elevate Pakistan’s diplomatic standing.

Delegations from the US and Iran are expected in Islamabad from April 10 for the next phase of talks.
