France has activated its Extreme Heat ORSEC emergency plan for the first time. The plan has been activated in all departments placed under the country's highest red heatwave alert.
A government’s spokesperson claimed that cooling centres would be opened across affected areas to provide relief for elderly people, the homeless and other at-risk groups.
The ORSEC civil protection mechanism, is designed to coordinate a nationwide emergency response during periods of exceptional heat and mobilise additional public resources.
According to Météo-France, nine departments in western France entered the highest red alert level, while another 72 departments remained under an orange heatwave warning.
Meteorologists said the latest heatwave, which began on July 4, is expected to persist until at least Tuesday, with temperatures forecast to climb again from Sunday.
Health authorities have urged residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day and regularly check on elderly relatives and neighbours.
France's public health agency has warned that repeated heatwaves can significantly increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations.
