Dubai is set to welcome a new cultural landmark with the announcement of the Dubai Arts Museum (DUMA), a floating museum to be built on an island in the heart of Dubai Creek.
The project was unveiled by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, who said the museum would serve as “a mirror of Dubai’s artistic identity and cultural spirit.”
Designed by acclaimed Japanese architect Tadao Ando, DUMA’s structure will integrate the waters of Dubai Creek into its overall design, symbolising the city’s blend of tradition and innovation. The museum aims to merge minimalist modernism with Dubai’s evolving cultural landscape.
The initiative is being developed in collaboration with Emirati businessman Abdullah Al Futtaim and his son Omar Al Futtaim, representing a partnership between the public and private sectors. Sheikh Mohammed described their participation as “a bright example of how private enterprise can contribute meaningfully to the city’s cultural and creative economy.”
According to officials, DUMA will showcase a mix of classical and contemporary art, serving not only as a museum but also as a public promenade and cultural hub offering scenic views of Dubai Creek.
Construction is expected to begin later this year, with completion projected within three years.
